About my paintings

The title of this series of three small paintings comes from the first line of Rilke’s poem, “Song of the Sea”. I chose it because the poem was so resonant with my experience visiting the Song of the Sea Cave at Nanjizal Beach, Cornwall – a visit that inspired these paintings. Rilke’s poem beautifully expresses the transient nature and insignificance of our vulnerabilities in the presence of the ancient vastness and power of the sea and winds.

Despite having regained my health and strength since receiving a successful kidney transplant several years ago, I’m now immunosuppressed for life, and there’s also no way to know how much more time I have left with my deteriorating vision and hearing. I don’t dwell on the threat of this risk of losing more of who I am and what I love to do, but it’s always there.

Except when I’m in touch with vitality. The vitality in nature connects me with the vitality in me.Then the vulnerability and fear is gone! And I feel alive, strong, connected, delighted, brave, full of hope and faith, grateful for it all. Thats what I felt that day as I hiked and swam, and it’s how I felt when I created these three mixed media paintings.

Friends in the UK, let me know if any of you would like to attend the private viewing or will be stopping by some other time, and please send me pics if you do!

And thank you to @foxyardstudio and @artmagnitude for the opportunity to share some of my work in the UK.
