Back to painting: inspired by collage
Earlier this year I was surprised to find my muse asking me to work in collage. I created a series of artworks using brown packing papers that I painted and then collaged onto the canvas. This artwork below is one of the artworks I made using this technique.
I was just enjoying settling into making art with this collage technique when my muse sent me back to painting again … this artwork below is an acrylic painting.
It’s such fun to see how my painting has been influenced by my collage work… big and bold shapes, intersecting and overlapping shapes, straight edges, repeat colour placements in places where the colous “shouldn’t be” (like sky blue down at the bottom right and yellow in the sky), textured shapes next to flat colour, simpler and more abstract shapes… what else do you notice?
I love the peaceful feeling this composition gives me… is it the straight edges and soft colours that create that feeling? And I love the colour palette… the pinks were a surprise… another influence from my collage paper artworks, originally coming from the colour palette for a commission of an abstract Australian landscape.
And I love how it looks in these warm and simply furnished spaces.
